Each Maori tribe has it's own distinctive style of carving. The decorations on this chess set are indicative of the TE ARAWA tribe of the Rotorua district. The KING is wearing a cloak made from feathers and he is holding a MERE (greenstone club). The QUEEN has her hands in the welcome position. Her bodice (PARE) is made with TANIKO weaving, whilst her skirt is made from harakeke flax. Fits an 18 inch (46cm) chess board. Height of the King is 120 mm.
